OOTD Wednesday NYFW Edition: ESSENCE Street Style Block Party

essence block party hero

During NYFW, I got a chance to go the ESSENCE Street Style Block Party. I will try to do my best to describe how I felt and what I saw while there…to be honest I was completely overwhelmed the entire time. It was TOO much! Talk about sensory overload. I couldn’t take it. In every direction there was fashion, individuality, personality, hair, skin, makeup, accessories! I was in heaven.  Besides all of the fabulous fashion, I appreciated how inclusive everyone was of one another. That is the one thing that I really enjoy about visiting larger fashion driven cities, the idea that however you may be feeling and want to express is not only accepted, but the norm. Let me explain…there was one attendee for example, who wore a Daffy Duck dress with tiered ruffle trim. To most in places other than NY, this would be outlandish, but in this particular atmosphere, it was not really even noticed. It was the norm. The right to wake up and wear whatever you want and go is freeing. Yes this post is about some of my favorite looks from that day, but what I wish for you reading to leave with is more of an open mind of those who do look like you, and those who do not. Enjoy!

ColourByNumbr SS16 NYFW Recap

ColourByNumbr SS16 NYFW Recap

fashion week banner CollageWhew! It’s been over a week since I’ve returned from NYFW and I am still tired!!!!  It takes a while to come down from the whirlwind that is fashion week, so I will do my best to summarize my experience. Somehow I managed to take over 800 pictures so I will most likely do this in the form of a few posts, but here is my quick overview in a nutshell!

After touching down in New York , my first official assignment was to cover backstage hair and makeup for the Academy of Art show. It was held at The Arc, Skylight Moynihan Station, one of the three new homes of NYFW. Hair for the show was provided by Aveda, nails Pattie Yankee, and makeup MAC Cosmetics. I really love providing backstage coverage during fashion week,  there is a completely different energy than front of house. For me it is the place where you really get to see the insider secrets of the show. See the last minute mishaps, how things are fixed, the drama, the rush of it all…I could go on and on. But backstage is definitely HIGH Energy! lol

Day 2

Day 2 was fun filled! As always, when I’m in New York I try to squeeze as many things in one day as possible, and that is exactly what I did during my second day. On the agenda for the day was coverage of the Osklen Backstage, assisting my friend Shaquita/Catrice during her first fashion show  for her line A Bridge To London during fashion week, meeting with my mentor and former boss Chandra, and finally ending the day with my friend from high school Sharae! Highlights of the day included meeting celebrity hair stylist Tippi Shorter and Director of Makeup Artistry Romero Jennings. EPIC! Also I was really happy to see my Chandra! She was such a blessing to me while I was in NY as an intern and she went to Kent! 20150912_101250_resized

Day 3

Ok so Day 3 was absolutely perfect. One reason I really love going to NY is for the streetstyle. I tell people all the time that NY is one place where you can wear absolutely anything  and no one will even bat an eye. I love the creative freedom and ability to express who you are without judgement. So with that being said, I was ecstatic to go to the ESSENCE Streetstyle Block Party in BK. I looked forward to it the entire time I was in NY and it did not disappoint! I was in fashion heaven and didn’t want to come down. At some points I was really overwhelmed being surrounded by so much creativity, culture, fashion, and freedom. It’s really hard to put into words. After the festival, I had an impromptu photo shoot with my friends, ate pizza in downtown Dumbo, went to a really cool designer pop-up shop, and ended the night at a eyewear launch. 20150913_174217-1-1

Day 4

Day 4 was all about saying my goodbyes to the city, shopping, and catching up with friends. I became obsessed with a ring that my friend Sharae had and made it my personal mission to have one made before leaving the city. So to SoHo I went to find one, on the way, I caught up with my good friend from college Evelyn and shopped till I dropped in between the two.

Runway Review LBSWith all the domestic and international fashion weeks over, it’s time to sit and make sense of it all. Designers spared no expense to pull off their over the top creations for Spring 2015.  Although there were thousands of looks presented, there were a few standout pieces that deserve special recognition. In the name of all things stylish, let’s send fashion week off with a bang and celebrate the best in show for Spring 2015.

Oh Karl, how we love you! Chanel Spring 2015 was absolutely amazing. The presentation alone, will go down in fashion HERstory as one for the books, per usual. This tweed trench with brightly colored lining and matching knee boots stole the show! So classicly Chanel, but with a modern twist.

Blumarine nailed it with this transparent mesh and floral appliche gown. I can so picture celebs like Nikki or Katy taking a number and standing in line to wear this dress come award season. It’s serving me simultaneous sex appeal and softness, and I love it.

I was floored when I saw this linear and geometric masterpiece by Balmain. For me this is what the European runway is all about. Drama! Balmain, known for in your face bold creations killed this season! This look however was all I needed to see.

J. Mendel

This gorgeous J. Mendel gown moved like water. Pictures don’t do it no justice. From the color-blocking to the sky scrapping split, this dress is definitely  for a grown (bleep) woman. It’s attention grabbing and powerful just like the woman it was made for. It was without a doubt one of my favs of the season.

Who doesn’t look forward to Alexander McQueen every season, I know I do. His show stopping designs literally take a few years for everyone to catch up to. McQueen collections give me the chills, I can always tell how much work went into each intricate detail, and this season was now different. This jumpsuit and bandeau may as well have just slapped me in the face. I was struck. Case closed.

What are your thoughts of my Spring 2015 Best in Show roundup? Were there any looks or designers that I missed? Tell me your thoughts!

WRITING REWIND: Runway Review Fall 2015

WRITING REWIND: Runway Review Fall 2015

There are literally hundreds of presentations that take place during fashion week, and I’m just speaking of the domestic showcases. One can literally go into a fashion tizzy from all of the new trends, ideas, and statements that are presented each season. But luckily for us, the stars always align in our favor and designers display similar ideas that we can digest as trends. Fall 2015 is no different, and there are indeed a few standout trends that we can take note of to look out for come fall.

More is More

Throw being understated out of the window, there were tons of embellished looks making their way down the runway. Seen in tons of shows including Reem Acra, Libertine, Alice + Olivia, and more designers used whatever they could get their hands on to add a little jazz to their fall statements. Heavy beading, embroidery, rhinestones, and sequins were just a few elements used as a wow factor. A great statement coat with heavy embellishments paired with something more simply underneath, is a great way to rock this trend next fall.

Inspired by the breezy seaside French town of Biarritz,  Designer Alejandra Alonso filled her  A MOI Spring 2015 NYFW collection with cool coastal tones of white and blue, while adding a few pops of metallic neutrals along the way. The entire collection exudes effortless sophistication using clean silhouettes and an occasional asymmetrical hemline. There are definitely a few standout looks from the collection that if added to your wardrobe would surely turn heads.À-MOI-SS15-Look-10-resizedWho doesn’t need a metallic leather iridescent top in their life?  Adding in the super adorb coral midi leather skirt wouldn’t hurt either. This LBS Chic worthy dream outfit could easily be worn together or separately, making each piece potential wardrobe staples. Continue reading “WRITING REWIND: LBS Runway Report A MOI SPRING 2015”

TIP DU JOUR TUESDAY: Getting to Fashion Week

TIP DU JOUR TUESDAY: Getting to Fashion Week

London Fashion Week - Day Two

Listen up ladies and gents, we are T-minus X number of days away from Fall Fashion Week (Feb 12-19th) and if you have always wanted to go,  now is the time to put your plans into motion. I didn’t become aware that non-industry professionals were able to attend fashion week until I was a senior in college , but want to help YOU save time and get there with these top three ways. Hope this comes in handy and that I see you in the tents!Volunteers_PhotoVolunteer

Yes, yes we would all love to be front row with Anna devouring the season’ s latest, but that may not always be the case at first. The first several times I attended fashion week I went as a volunteer. Now don’t go turning up your nose up at setting up chairs or picking up trash, when the lights go down and runway is unveiled, you get to see the same show as the industry’s top editors. Not to mention you may get to take home a cool shirt as a souvenir. If you do get  to volunteer, make sure you are indispensable and make great connections. Use your time wisely. The goal is to be invited back!

Note: Aside from the Mercedes-Benz website PR Agencies, internship sites, and even Craigslist.com are great tools to landing a gig. Fashion is a very is a very last minute industry so often times opportunities spring up the week of.

Jada-Pinkett-Smith-Coco-Rocha-Uzo-Aduba1-1024x682We must have all died and gone to fashion heaven. The new Christian Siriano Spring 2015 is simply divine. Focusing on making a collection that felt “tranquil like a Japanese zen rock garden,” Christian not only succeeded but created a masterpiece so wonderful it sent the fashion world into a ethereal tizzy. Per usual, his shows’ front row was filled with A-list celebrities including Coco Rocha,  and our fav BFF’s in our head Jada Pinkett-Smith and Uzo Aduba.

LOOK-33-682x1024Speaking of bodies of water, this amazingly stunning navy gown is EV-ER-Y-THING. The color, cut, and draping are beautifully put together yet still feel easy and free. With a nod to old hollywood glamour, this gown would be perfect for any black-tie soiree.

LOOK-12-682x1024After seeing the laser cut glass sculpture that sits within a body of water by Australian artist Sergio Redegalli; Siriano went to work creating clothing that resembles  reflected light, glass, and water. If this MUST HAVE fringe number doesn’t remind you of ice, and chiseled glass, we don’t know what will.
